When he retires at the end of this year, Commissioner Mike Forsman will have served 20 years on the County Board, and more than 30 years total counting other elected positions he's held. In recognition of that, Minnesota Power presented him its Distinguished Service Award.

St. Louis County received national recognition earlier this summer for its innovative use of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. It was definitely a team effort, and on Tuesday the County Board recognized the more than 20 employees from seven departments who are involved in GIS efforts.

In a ritual rich with tradition dating back centuries, a piece of the present was preserved for the future. St. Louis County rededicated the cornerstone at the courthouse in Virginia, preparing a new time capsule for future generations to discover.

A poster of a World War II B-25 Bomber, autographed by hundreds of veterans, has been presented to the St. Louis County Veterans Service Office. It's a gift from the Disabled American Veterans in appreciation for the county's work to serve veterans.

The sad reality of today's world is that we need to be prepared for disaster - including those made and inflicted by human beings. The Post Office in Duluth hosted a training drill Wednesday for its employees and regional responders so all could practice what to do should a package with anthrax ever show up in their facility. St. Louis County Public Health nurses, as well as 911 emergency communications specialists, were among the participants.

This Saturday, August 16, is the 4th annual St. Louis County O'Neil Race for Wellness 5K, and many county employees and their families, along with the public, will take part. It's one of numerous wellness initiatives offered by the county to encourage healthier lifestyles.
