An accident near Cook left one person dead, but remarkably four other people survived. Their car collided with a semi, became trapped beneath the trailer and then caught fire. The outcome could have been much worse if not for the resourcefulness of rescuers, including a Public Works employee.

With a long holiday weekend fast approaching, many people will be making road trips. The 4th of July weekend is typically one of the deadliest on Minnesota roads. The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office is a partner in the state's Toward Zero Deaths program, and recently was recognized for its efforts to reduce traffic deaths and injuries.

One was washed out in last year's flood, the other was no longer structurally safe. In the space of a day, two bridges in different parts of our vast County reopened. That's progress!

If you've ever visited the Veterans Service Office in Ely, chances are you've met Louise Kainz (shown on the right). She's been serving veterans and their families on behalf of St. Louis County for 42 years. Louise will retire at the end of this week, and shared with commissioners this week about how her job has changed over the years.
