In October 2004, St. Louis County successfully completed a certification audit to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative ® (SFI) standard and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 Environmental Management System standard. The SFI standard is a set of principles, objectives and measures designed to balance commercial forestry practices with long term protection of wildlife, plants, soil and water quality. ISO 14001 is an international standard that sets out a management framework for managing and improving environmental performance.
The operations audited included:
- forest management planning;
- forest renewal activities including: site preparation, forest regeneration, use of forest chemicals and management of forest health;
- management of infrastructure development including: road construction, maintenance and obliteration; gravel pits; linear developments and easements; and
- management of recreational trails and cabin leases on tax forfeited lands;
The audit resulted in the successful certification of all St. Louis County Land & Minerals Department operations to SFI and ISO 14001.
