Man drowns attempting to save dog

Witnesses say the man had gone in the water of a former mine pit, trying to save his dog, who'd become caught on something. The victim had a pulse at the time he was rescued, but died a short time later.


Father and daughter drown in Lake Superior

Despite high waves and red flag warnings about rip tides, the two had been swimming off a Park Point Beach. Numerous agencies assisted in searching for the 10-year-old girl and 38-year-old man.

One woman is recovering after being stabbed in the stomach at a Mt. Iron bar. Another woman has surrendered to deputies in connection with the crime.


Public notification meeting on released sex offender

Sheriff's Deputies will hold a community notification on Monday, August 7, at the Public Safety Building regarding the release of a Level 3 sex offender. Timothy Davich will be living in Rice Lake and has a history of sexual contact with young male victims.

Woman injured in accident south of Cook

A woman from Cook was injured when her car went off the road and struck some trees. Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. No other vehicles were involved. The accident happened on Heino Road in Angora Township.


House fire in Tower kills a baby; man arrested

An 11-month-old boy was found dead following a house fire in Tower. A 24-year-old man is in custody pending charges of manslaughter, child neglect and other crimes.


Deputies arrest two on heroin and weapons charges

A man and a woman from Hibbing have been charged after being found with 43 grams of heroin and a stolen revolver. Their arrests follow an investigation by the Lake Superior Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force.


Boat accident on Crane Lake injures three

The group had been boating in the dark when they struck a rock point. They were able to make it back to the marina on their own, then were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Alcohol is considered a factor in the accident.


Man injured after rolling his ATV on steep hill

A 21-year-old man from Cotton had to be airlifted to a Duluth hospital following an ATV accident on an off-road trail in Alborn Township. Deputies say the man was not wearing a helmet and alcohol is believed to have been a factor.


House fire in Rice Lake considered suspicious

No one was home at the time, and deputies were able to put out the fire with an extinguisher before fire crews arrived. The cause of the fire remains under investigation but is considered suspicious.
