Snowmobiler rescued after vehicle goes through ice

The Sheriff's Office is reminding people to be careful of poor ice conditions. Deputies and Rescue Squad volunteers had to use an air boat to rescue a man whose snowmobile had gone through the ice on Rice Lake. The man had jumped to safety before his vehicle sank, but couldn't get to shore due to poor ice conditions.

County Board declares state of local disaster following storm

Commissioners unanimously approved the resolution after initial assessements show an estimated $3.4 million in damages from the October 27 snow and windstorm. The declaration starts the process to possibly receive state and federal public disaster assistance for the City of Duluth, DNR, and Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad, as well as the County.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries were reported, but the detached garage received significant damage and the nearby house received minor damage.

Body found near Proctor railyard identified as missing Superior man

An autopsy has confirmed the body found in a swampy area near Proctor is a 51-year-old Superior man who is suspected of being involved in stealing copper wire from the nearby rail yard. Preliminary results suggest the man drowned, but his death remains under investigation.
