Sheriff's Office welcomes K-9 Wesson

The Sheriff's Office's K-9 program is back to full strength with the addition of an 18-month old German Shepherd named Wesson. K-9 Wesson is trained to detect narcotics and other evidence, as well as to apprehend suspects.

Calling 911 is still the recommended way to request help, but now it is possible to text to 911. This will help people with hearing loss, or who must remain quiet in a dangerous situation. The service is available in St. Louis County and across the state.

Homicide investigated in death of woman near Hibbing

71-year-old Courtney Fenske was found dead in her home in Lavell Township last week. An autopsy indicates she was murdered sometime between Sunday, Nov. 26, and Monday, Nov. 27. Anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious is asked to call 911.

High speed chase ends in arrest of McKinley man

When deputies from the Lake Superior Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force attempted to approach a man, he instead rammed a squad with his vehicle and took off, leading to a high speed chase through Virginia and Eveleth. A total of six law enforcement agencies took part in the search. The man was ultimately found hiding near Gilbert and arrested.

Cause of death released for man found last month near CN Railyard

The medical examiner has determined that Jack Cotrell died from methamphetamine toxicity, with immersion in water and pulmonary emphysema as other significant conditions. No foul play was involved in his death.

Snowmobiler rescued after vehicle goes through ice

The Sheriff's Office is reminding people to be careful of poor ice conditions. Deputies and Rescue Squad volunteers had to use an air boat to rescue a man whose snowmobile had gone through the ice on Rice Lake. The man had jumped to safety before his vehicle sank, but couldn't get to shore due to poor ice conditions.

Ely man arrested for sexual assault

Sheriff's deputies, along with Ely police, have arrested a 34-year-old man who is accused of threatening a teenage girl with a knife and sexually assaulting her.

Fire destroys garage in Normana Township

A fire believed started by a wood stove that was left unattended, destroyed a garage on McQuade Road and damaged the nearby residence. Thankfully, no one was injured.
