Lost hikers found in Lake Vermilion area

A couple got lost while hiking on a trail between Black Bay and Norwegian Bay. After an approximately hour and 45 minute search, they were found uninjured and assisted out of the woods.


High speed chase in three counties ends with arrest of wanted felon

A man wanted on multiple outstanding felony warrants involving drugs and weapons, lead law enforcement on a high speed chase for more than 90 miles through three counties before a PIT technique was used to stop his car. The man is now in jail, and no one was injured.


Fire destroys camper in Industrial Township

No one was living in the camper at the time of the fire, and the cause remains under investigation.


Free public K-9 demonstration on June 25 in Hermantown

The annual United States Police Canine Association Region 18 annual certification trials begin Sunday, June 25, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hermantown High School football field with a K-9 demonstration that is free and open to the public. The Hermantown Police Dept and St. Louis County Sheriff's Office are co-hosting the event.


Man injured after accidentally shooting self

A man camping in the Boundary Waters accidentally shot himself while trying to remove a loaded handgun from a holster. He was able to walk to a point where other hikers found him. He was taken to the hospital in Ely for treatment of his injury.


Missing boater rescued from island on Lake Vermilion

An overnight search ended with the safe rescue of an Illinois man who'd been reported missing after failing to return to a lodge on Lake Vermilion. Members of the volunteer Rescue Squad found the man on Hoyt Island and transported him for a medical evaluation.


Accident in Midway Township injures two

The driver and passenger of one vehicle were injured following an accident with another vehichle at the intersection of Lindahl and Stark Roads. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. 


Man injured after jumping into "The Deeps" in Lester River

The 22-year-old struck his head on a rock and lost conciousness. Friends were able to pull him to safety. The Sheriff's Office reminds people to use caution when jumping into area lakes and rivers.


Deputies and firefighters respond to Lake Superior water emergency

A boat on Lake Superior ran into trouble when it ran out of gas. The boat's occupants were able to push it to another boat, which towed it to safety.


Fire destroys large shed in Lakewood Township

No people or livestock were injured, but the structure and all equipment stored inside it were destroyed. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
