Public Health Achievement Awards presented

The County Board and Public Health honored Verne Wagner for his work to combat opioid abuse; and the National Diabetes Prevention Program team, a partnership involving Essentia Health and the Duluth Area and Mesabi Family YMCAs.


Health and Human Service Conference Call for Presentations

St. Louis County Health and Human Service Conference organizers are calling for presentations for the annual conference to be held October 12-13, 2017.  Proposals are due by May 31.


National Public Health Week Activities Planned

Special awards and activities are planned for National Public Health Week, April 3-9. Among the activities is presentation of the 2017 Public Health Achievement Awards at the County Board meeting at 9:30 a.m. on April 4th in the St. Louis County Courthouse in Duluth.


Public Health Team to attend Walkability Institute

St. Louis County Public Health will lead a six person team from Duluth to attend the National Association of Chronic Disease Director's 2017 Walkability Action Institute.  The event presents a unique opportunity for the team to take action to improve the transportation system for walkers.


Information meetings for parents of children with autism

Meetings will be held March 7 in Duluth and March 8 in Mountain Iron to highlight strategies for parents to keep children with autism safe - both at home and in their community.


Nominations sought for Public Health Achievement Awards

Do you know a person or group who deserves recognition for work improving the health of others in our county? Nominate them for a Public Health Achievement Award.


County conducting annual count of people who are homeless

The annual survey, conducted by Public Health and Human Services and several agency partners, seeks to get as accurate of a count as possible of the number of people in the county living somwhere not meant for human habitation.


Foster parents needed! Open house set for Nov. 17

An open house and information session is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 17, 5-6:30 p.m. for anyone interested in learning more about what's required to serve as a foster parent.


Linnea Mirsch named Director of Public Health and Human Services

Mirsch has been leading the County's largest department on an interim basis since July. She has already played a key role in guiding the Board through budget considerations, including staffing recommendations and other strategies to address the growing challenges of child protection services, out-of-home placements, mental illness and substance abuse. 


Safe Routes to School kicks off at Duluth's Piedmont Elementary

Piedmont Elementary's Safe Routes to School program will hold an informational meeting for parents and neighbors on Oct. 10. The meeting will include a presentation on how the program works, and the key issues identified through a survey conducted last year.
